STARS AND DANDELIONS
Just like the small stones on the seabed,
The stars in the depth of the blue sky
That are waiting for the coming of the night
Are not visible to our eyes.
Though not visible, they are there;
Though we cannot see them, they are there.
Even though the dandelions on the riverside
Have lost their heads and withered,
Their strong roots between the stones
Are awaiting the coming of spring, hidden from our eyes.

They lie submerged till dark comes...
Stars unseen in the light of day.
You can't see them, still they're there.

Wait silently for spring to come...

星とたんぽぽ
青いお空のそこふかく、
海の小石のそのように、
夜がくるまでしずんでる、
昼のお星はめにみえぬ。
見えぬけれどもあるんだよ、
見えぬものでもあるんだよ。
ちってすがれたたんぽぽの、
かわらのすきにだァまって、
春のくるまでかくれてる、
つよいその根はめにみえぬ。

WHALE MEMORIAL
The whale memorial service is at the ennd of spring,
the time of the flying fish harvest.
When the bell at the seaide temple is struck,
its sound rippling across the water,
the village fishermen in their best clothes
hurry for the temple on the shore
while alone in the open sea, a whale child
weeps in longing for its dead father and mother.
How far the bell resounds across the waters...

鯨法会
鯨法会は春のくれ、
海に飛魚採れるころ。
浜のお寺で鳴る鐘が、
ゆれて水面をわたるとき、
村の漁師が羽織着て、
浜のお寺へいそぐとき、
沖で鯨の子がひとり、
その鳴る鐘をききながら、
死んだ父さま、母さまを、
こいし、こいしと泣いてます。
海のおもてを、鐘の音は、
海のどこまで、ひびくやら。

Let's not tell anyone.
In the corner of the garden this morning,
a flower shed a tear.
If word of this spreads
to the ears of the bee,
it'll feel it's done wrong
and go back to return the nectar.

BIRD, BELL, AND I
Even if I spread my arms wide,
I can't fly through the sky,
but still the little bird who flies
can't run on the ground as fast as I.
Even fi I shake my body about
no pretty sound comes out,
but still, the tinkling bell
doesn't know as many songs as I.
Bird, bell, and I,
we're all different, and that's just fine.

私と小鳥と鈴と
私が両手をひろげても、
お空はちっとも飛べないが
飛べる小鳥は私のやうに、
地面を速くは走れない。
私がからだをゆすっても、
きれいな音は出ないけど、
あの鳴る鈴は私のやうに
たくさんな唄は知らないよ。
鈴と、小鳥と、それから私、
みんなちがって、みんないい。
